The decision in brief

Keep tokens in your wallet, or load a card balance?

MetaMask Card is relevant if keeping control of supported tokens until payment matters most. CryptoCard is relevant if you want a prepaid balance funded directly with assets such as BTC or XMR. The free MetaMask tier still has a usage fee schedule.

Consider MetaMask Card if

You already use a compatible MetaMask wallet and want card spending connected to supported on-chain assets.

01

Self-custody changes the funding workflow

MetaMask describes control of tokens until a payment is made. You still need a compatible asset, network and card configuration. A token being visible in your wallet does not make it spendable through every card route. CryptoCard instead gives you deposit instructions for the selected asset and credits a USD balance. [1]

02

Look beyond the annual subscription

MetaMask’s fee schedule distinguishes token-related fees, network gas and transaction charges. It lists a cross-border charge for the free tier and different Metal conditions. Compare the merchant country and asset you plan to use; a free virtual subscription is not a promise of zero transaction costs. [2]

03

Treat Metal as a separate purchase

At $199 a year, Metal needs its own cost assessment. Calculate only the benefits you expect to use, with their published caps and eligibility. CryptoCard has no annual membership; its physical card is an optional one-time purchase with shipping. The two charges buy different products. [1]
